Linear Actuators
Electric Linear Actuators
Thomson is the market leader for electric linear actuators used in the most demanding applications. Electric linear actuators are versatile, easy to use and affordable compared to most alternatives. There are many reasons to switch from a pneumatic or hydraulic actuator solution to an electric one. Better controllability, reduced complexity, and better performance with a smaller footprint are the main ones. Other advantages of linear actuators include:
- Cost Effective: Electric power costs less than hydraulic or pneumatic power and cables are less expensive than tubes and hoses
- Less Energy Consumption: Electric actuators only need energy when moving; at a standstill, they are self-locking and need no power to keep the position
- Faster Assembly: Cables are a lot quicker and easier to install and commission
- Smaller Footprint: An electric actuator system is lightweight and requires little space
- Reduced Maintenance/Downtime: Less maintenance = lower total cost of ownership
At Thomson, the most advanced actuator models are known as “smart”. They have integrated onboard controls that enhance controllability and allows the user to monitor performance and diagnostics to help increase efficiency and productivity.
The full line of Thomson electric actuators can equip your applications with a variety of capabilities and smart features:
- Stroke lengths from 1 – 40 in. (25 to 1000mm)
- Dynamic load ratings from 25 – 3596 lbs. (100 N – 16 kN)
- Speeds from 0.2 – 2.0 in./sec (5 – 50mm/sec)
- Voltage choices:
- 12 VDC, 24 VDC, 36 VDC, 90 VDC
- 115 VAC, 230 VAC, 400 VAC
- Duty cycle minimum of 25%
- IP ratings of: IP65, IP66, IP67, IP69K
- Available with overload clutches, electronic load sensing, limit switches, analog and digital feedback, J1939 CAN bus, LIN bus
Precision Linear Actuators
Thomson precision linear actuators are designed to deliver high performance in applications requiring continuous duty operation. They provide the highest thrust and speed of any electric actuator and allow you to design more compact machinery with maximum throughput. Often chosen as a clean and efficient alternative to fluid power solutions, precision linear actuators draw energy only on demand and operate more quietly than pneumatics.
Stepper Motor Linear Actuators
Thomson stepper motor linear actuators combine a hybrid stepper motor and a precision lead screw in one compact envelope. Thomson stepper motor linear actuators are offered in three basic configurations – rotating screw (MLS), rotating nut (MLN), and actuator (MLA).
The open rotating screw and rotating nut assemblies suit applications where external guidance is present or a high level of design flexibility is required. The closed assembly is ideal to further simplify the design process and remove requirements for external guidance.
Worm Gear Screw Jacks
Thomson’s worm gear screw jacks MULI and JUMBO set new engineering standards for precision and reliability. Pre-assembled modules can be customized to your application’s specifications.
- Trapezoidal screw for rough conditions and good price/performance ratio
- Ball screw for long duty cycle, high efficiency, and high positioning accuracy
Linear Bearings and Guides
Linear Ball Bushing Bearings
Thomson offers several families of inch or metric linear bearings including the Super Smart Ball Bushings, with load capacities up to 7760 lb. When used with RoundRail linear guides, the inherent self-aligning design allows for ultra-smooth travel when mounted to wider-toleranced prepared surfaces. When used with Thomson 60 Case shafting, linear bearings last up to 50% longer than conventional bearings.

Ball Screws
The ball screw drive is an assembly that converts rotary motion to linear motion (or vice versa). It consists of a ball screw and a ball nut packaged as an assembly with recirculating ball bearings. With rolling elements, the ball screw drive has a very low friction coefficient and is typically greater than 90% efficient. The forces transmitted are distributed over a large number of ball bearings, giving a low relative load per ball comparatively.
